The medium-sized neonatal oxyhood, also known as an oxygen hood or oxyhood, is a clear plastic enclosure that is placed over the infant’s head to provide an oxygen-rich environment. It is designed for infants who are able to breathe but need more oxygen. The oxygen hood facilitates oxygenation by saturating the space around the infant’s head with warm, humidified oxygen, without putting pressure on the infant’s head and neck. The clear enclosure allows for observation of the infant and has an oxygen inlet valve and an air control valve to control the amount of oxygen and prevent carbon dioxide buildup. Oxyhoods come in a variety of sizes and can also be mounted on other medical equipment, such as a resuscitation bed or incubator. The neonatal oxygen hood allows the infant to receive the desired FiO2 to maintain adequate oxygen saturation. To use the oxyhood, the infant is placed in a supine position and the hood is placed completely over the head, avoiding contact with the neck, chin, and shoulders to prevent oxygen leakage. Oxygen is directed into the chamber through the device nozzle, and its inlet flow rate is controlled by a manometer and air adjustment screw. A minimum flow rate of 8 to 10 liters per minute is recommended to prevent carbon dioxide accumulation. The required oxygen concentration must be administered correctly and the percentage of oxygen in the infant’s blood must be checked regularly by pulse oximeter. The oxyhood plays an important role in improving the clinical condition of infants requiring supplemental oxygen by facilitating oxygen distribution and reducing the accumulation and release of CO2 gas from the infant’s exhaled air. Since excessive oxygen exposure can cause retinal damage, chronic lung damage, infection, and skin fungi, careful monitoring of the infant’s blood oxygen level is essential. In summary, the medium-sized neonatal oxyhood is a vital tool for providing supplemental oxygen to infants who are having respiratory difficulties, with the advantage of allowing easy access to the infant for care and monitoring and avoiding the pressure and discomfort caused by oxygen masks.
